Port of Buchanan

The Port of Buchanan, located 272 km southeast of Monrovia in Grand Bassa County, is Liberia’s second-largest port, managed by the National Port Authority. Originally built in 1960 for iron ore exports, it features two breakwaters, a 225-257m ore-loading quay, and a 334m commercial quay with water depths up to 12.95m. It serves as a vital hub for exporting iron ore, rubber, and palm oil, supporting major industries like Arcelor Mittal.
Key Features and Capabilities:
  • Infrastructure: The harbor is protected by two breakwaters (1,890m and 590m) and provides a 210m wide entrance.
  • Capacity: The port handles significant cargo traffic, with specialized facilities for iron ore, including a railroad connection to Yekepa, Nimba County.
  • Storage & Equipment: Features approximately 15 hectares of open storage, a 22,000 sq. ft. warehouse, and various cranes (up to 130 tonnes) for handling diverse cargo.
  • Strategic Importance: It is a key gateway for trade in West Africa, supporting mineral and agricultural exports and, as of 2012, serving as a hub for revitalized iron ore operations.
